It took a while of driving back and forth Aguirre Street at 40 kph for us to finally spot Sensei Sushi.
Tip: Look for the well-lit korean mini mart and the equally bright Nuat Thai Massage.
Sensei Sushi is the dim spot sandwiched in between. Lol. :P
The place is small and very basic
But I promise you there is nothing small and basic about the food.
Chef Bruce Ricketts is one Nobu Matsuhisa waiting to happen!
We all had the omakase and let the young and talented, albeit very shy and soft-spoken chef surprise us.
He came by our table to introduce each course in detail, but I had to take photos with my camera
for the blog, take photos again with my phone for instagram, talk to my friends, eat, drink, etc. etc...
I was really very busy so forgive me if I wasn't able to take notes properly.
Uni wrapped in lapu lapu sashimi
Tuna two ways. Fresh and seared, pineapple roasted in brown sugar, chips
Amaebi, lime juice and chili, charred cucumber
Salmon belly, katsuobushi, truffle oil, scallions
Scallop on scallop. Scallop seared with yuzu and cilantro, drizzled with XO sauce made with
fresh scallops and blended with uni
Japanese-Mexican Taco. Pork flavored with pork fat, braised octopus.
Fold and eat
Japanese oyster with watermelon kimchi, seaweed, aoili
Pork belly with fresh oyster marinated in sake. Wrap it up like ssam!
Anago, pork, squid with sesame and ginger dressing
Gindara marinated in sake with red miso and katsuobushi
Hamachi kabutoni
Skirt steak, mushrooms, garlic chips
Every dish of our surprise dinner was new and bold and exciting.
I wish I could say the same for dessert.
Caramelized banana, tofu cheesecake, chocolate ganache
Flourless lava cake with vanilla ice cream and mangoes
At Sensei Sushi, you can bring your own bottles, there's no corkage.
We brought our own desserts, too. I ate them even before dinner started.
Love Virgie's mango tart.
The owners of big and happy bellies :)
