So San Pellegrino says Mr. & Mrs. Bund is THE 43rd Best Restaurant in the World, 7th in Asia, and Number 1 in Shanghai.
This is what jinlovestoeat says:
Errrrr…… NO.
The restaurant or "Modern Eatery" by Paul Pairet is a huge space with a chichi address on the bund.
The interiors are dark and sexy (and just a little bit funky) in blacks, grays and reds.
You can sit and watch the chefs in action through these colored glasses
Frances gushed about how cute these little chairs were and wanted me to take a photo of her
sitting on one. Before she could lay her butt on it, a staff stopped her and advised that the
chairs are for bags only and might break under her weight. Hahaha!!!
It was so embarrassing she ordered a bottle of wine to drink the
humiliation away. Wine list in an iPad = WinePad! Lol! :)
Our server recommended this bottle of red
Complimentary Crostini with Tuna Mousse. The mousse was so light and airy it was like foam.
Clap clap for the presentation!
Delicious crusty breads and butter
Because we were a big group, I was able to try quite a few dishes. (It's a jinlovestoeat rule. You eat with me, you share your food with me!)
Of the many, many appetizers, mains and sides, only two dishes stood out for me - Foie Gras Crumble and Lemon & Lemon Tart.
The rest were just okay, nothing that made me jump for joy. Some were disappointing even. I guess I expected a lot more with the highway robbery price tags.
Arugula Mushroom Truffle Salad - arugula salad, soy dressing, truffle and paris mushrooms,
parmigiano flakes
Foie Gras Light Crumble - light duck foie gras mousse + raisin hazelnut crumble
This was absolutely divine!!! If you have to order one dish only at Mr. & Mrs. Bund, let it be this!
Seared Foie Gras Pomelo - quite a unique pairing, but did not really do anything for me
Grilled Foie Gras
Scallops Lemon-Ginger - seared scallops, olive oil, lemon, soy, garlic, ginger, parsley.
Perfectly seared and a bit raw inside, just the way I like my mollusk.
Chilled Tomato Consomme - chilled basil tomato water broth
Lamb Chops with Black Truffle
I forgot the name of this dish, but it was called "Lamb Ess Garlic" on the bill :P
Rossini Chateaubriand Fillet - seared foie gras, truffle perigueux red wine sauce.
The foie gras was terribly overcooked.
Beef Long Short Rib Bordelaise Ceps Marrow - traditional French red wine sauce,
roasted ceps and beef marrow. Mr. & Mrs. Bund's signature dish could be a lot more tender.
Duck Confit with Seared Foie Gras
Risotto Truffle - truffles and paris mushrooms risotto, truffle light meuniere, parmigiano
Coquillettes Ham and Cheese - paris ham, parmigiano, gruyere
Asparagus XL Bearnaise - asparagus steamed "A La Serviette"
served with traditional French tarragon-butter emulsion (not in photo)
Ceps Essential Garlic - fricassee of ceps, shallots, garlic.
This one was pretty good, but who can go wrong with garlic and mushrooms?
Ooohhh… personalized steak knife!
Eyeing our neighbor's house-smoked salmon being carved tableside
Nutella Yogurt - nutella petit pot, yogurt and tuile sable. BLAH!!!!!!
Lemon & Lemon Tart - and this was the bomb! So good it erased memories of our previous
characterless dishes. Well, only until the very last spoonful. (Yes, I wiped this out.)
Inside the candied lemon bomb was some lemon sorbet, some lemon curd, fresh orange,
and vanilla chantilly. It was a most creative dessert and was outrageously delicious!
And that is saying A LOT coming from a person who loves only chocolates for dessert!
If you have absolutely no choice but to dine at Mr. & Mrs. Bund, order only the Foie Gras Crumble and this bomb of a lemon.
Us fat bombs! :D
So many awards...
Must be the view! :P
