“6404 Camia”
“The Secret Hunan Restaurant”
“The No-Name Restaurant Behind Rockwell”
It is like calling me “220 Clearwater Bay” or “The Fat Girl Who Blogs” or “The Glutton Who Won’t Stop Eating.”
But the secret restaurant with no name actually has a name. Gasp!!!
Yes, it’s true. Its name is… (drumroll, please)…
“You Jie Xiao Chao”
Okay, too much Chinese words to remember at once.
Maybe just YJXC?
YJXC is owned by a Mainlander couple who operates it from a simple box structure of cream walls, white tiles, wooden tables and chairs.
A room full of Mainlanders on a Sunday night
Duck Hot Pot 鴨肉火鍋 – I tell you, if there is only one dish, then this is it. Fried in garlic, chili and a blend of herbs and spices, this very tasty and spicy duck dish has the power to justify all the illegal immigrants who have taken over 168 and Tutuban, the triads, the Falun Gong, etc. etc. The duck is skin and bones, meat is almost non-existent, but the bold and beautiful flavors just make you wanna suck at the little duck morsels. Truly a winner.
The dishes that follow, however, are not as mind-shattering. Aside from a few good ones like the scrambled egg with chives and the fried string beans, all the other dishes, I have to say, pale greatly in comparison.
But thank God they are not ulcer-burning spicy. Because a real Hunanese meal can be as painful as this.
Pig Ear 醬豬耳 – crunchy and chewy
Gongbao Chicken 宫保鸡丁 – I ate more peanuts than chicken
Steamed Pork Belly 梅菜扣肉 – lean part is dry and hard
Fried Shrimps 開胃蝦 – mom’s version is so much better
Steamed Dumplings 水餃 – thick-skinned
Scrambled Egg with Chives 韭菜炒蛋 – delicious
Mapo Tofu 麻婆豆腐 – not at all spicy
Beef with Chili – just alright
Celery with Dried Tofu 芹菜香干 – can’t even remember we ordered this
Fried String Beans 干煸四季豆 – sweet and crunchy
Scallion Pancake 蔥油餅 – tastes like microwavables
Duck Hot Pot! Duck Hot Pot!
